“Those who are unable to express themselves precisely and wisely naturally seek out someone who is capable of doing so. My thoughts are basically the reflections of other people’s thoughts. I hope that this will help me reach a more complete conclusion than I myself would have been able to find.”

CDF VIDEO LIBRARY

The CDF video library comprises over 1100 films. Its core consists of films presented at Ji.hlava IDFF since 2009 to today. The collection is being continuously updated with both Czech and foreign films, including many experimental works. The film collection is constantly being expanded adding films from the previous editions of the festival as well as other notable film works that illustrate various fundamental elements of filmmaking – sound, editing, styles, genres and the like.

The film catalogue is available online; however, films can only be watched on our on-site video stations at the Center for Documentary Film in Jihlava.

There are two possibilities of searching our library: by entering the search term in the search panel in the right upper corner of the page or by browsing the catalogue of films in alphabetical order. If the search turns out too many results, we recommend using the advanced search option and limit the search to the selected areas.

The film database is interconnected with a database of authors, which makes it very easy to find, for example, which screenwriter most often collaborates with a particular director.

Films can only be watched at CDF in Jihlava but the film database search is available anywhere using the Internet. However, we recommend booking the video station in advance first by loggin in to your CDF account directly on the card of the selected film. If you have not yet registered to CDF, you can use the link registration. The registration will enable you to watch films at CDF, but also to make reservations for a selected day and hour.

CDF’s annual membership fee is CZK 100 (CZK 50 for students) and, along with the possibility to watch films in CDF, it entitles you to reduced admission to screenings organised by the CDF.

The right column features our events, below are the latest film recommendations. Here you will find brand new additions as well as films addressing specific topics from various perspectives.

Film Highlights

Spectres are haunting Europe

The Idomeni refugee camp housed people from the Middle East who were trying to cross the border into Europe. When the Greek police closed the camp, the refugees resisted and blocked a railway line used to deliver goods. Maria Kourkouta’s minimalist documentary not only observes these events but also presents carefully modeled static images that open up the space within and without the frame of view, and in the closing black-and-white sequence offers a poetic commentary. The result is a bleak portrait of a place where endless lines of refugees try to preserve the final remnants of their individual freedoms.

A hole in the head

Everyone knows about the Roma holocaust, but no one talks about it. The process of eliminating memories of it began more or less at the end of the Second World War, when many mass graves in work and detention camps remained intact. Even for the winners, the Roma were “second class” victims. In a number of European countries (France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Croatia, Serbia), the director confronts a forgetful present with memories of the last surviving witnesses of these horrific events. The result is a partially scripted and staged documentary - an elegy to the victims of a monstrous regime and human indifference.

24 Praska st

Lucyna and Krzysztof are a long-time married couple who operate a salvage yard in a socially excluded area of Łódź, Poland. Patrycja Polkowska’s observational documentary captures how the couple transforms the salvage yard every day into an eccentric microcosm where all those who are offended or humiliated can find help.

YPS JIN

The Kurdish war shows the need for women to organize in their own guerilla units. Muslim women with assault rifles, dedicated to defending themselves and their loved ones, tell their stories to the camera. They talk about fighting against Turkey, against Daesh, against the patriarchy and the state. And they are successful. They are fighting for a revolution that will make them equal members of society.

By the People: The Election of Barack Obama

The two filmmakers noticed Barack Obama, the senator with a spark in his eye, a year before he launched his candidacy for President of the United States. Even before it was clear that he would run in 2007, the crew was given exclusive access to his everyday life. As a result, the film shows all the things needed for winning, including the effort put in by his family members, volunteers, and campaign staff.
